10 awesome music concerts not to miss this weekend

1. Sting in Manchester, 7 April 2017

After finishing school, Gordon Sumner worked as a bus conductor, a builder, a tax officer, and finally qualified as a teacher. He played in jazz bands in the evenings, weekends and during his breaks from teaching. Gordon had a habit of performing in a black and yellow striped sweater, which earned him the nickname, Sting.

Sting needs absolutely no introduction. This multi award-winning musician rose to fame as the singer, bass player and chief songwriter for The Police from 1977 to 1984. He made his solo début in 1985 and has since released 12 studio albums and has won a truck-load of awards. And received a CBE in 2003 for his services to music!

2. Booka Shade in London, 7 April 2017

Booka Shade is considered by many house music fans as maestros of the Frankfurt electronic music scene. Arno Kammermeier and Walter Merziger made their breakthrough in 2004 when they released their album, Memento. It featured the smash hit, “Body Language”, which instantly appealed to an international club audience – and became the “Ibiza Track of the Season”!

3. Paul Weller in York, 7 April 2017

Paul Weller aka The Modfather is considered by many as one of the most respected British songwriters of the past three decades. Weller rose to fame as the singer and guitarist for The Jam, and later for The Style Council. But he embarked on a solo career from 1991 and hasn’t looked back since. Weller is set to release his thirteenth studio album, A Kind Revolution, next month.

4. En Vogue in London, 7 April 2017

Frequently considered as one of the best female vocal groups in history, En Vogue has sold over 20 million albums since forming in 1989. The group’s 1990 début album, Born to Sing featured the hit singles: “Hold On”, “Lies”, “You Don't Have to Worry” and “Don't Go”. They’ve received seven Grammy Award nominations, and two of their tracks are ranked in Billboard's list of the most successful songs of all time by a girl group. En Vogue will release their seventh studio album, Electric Café later this year.

5. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds in Aberdeen, 8 April 2017

After officially leaving the mighty Oasis in 2011, Noel Gallagher launched his solo project in the same year. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds released its eponymous début album in October 2011 to very positive reviews. The High Flying Birds are former Oasis members Mike Rowe and Chris Sharrock, and Russell Pritchard and Tim Smith from The Zutons. Gallagher is set to release his third solo album in 2017.

6. 2manydjs in London, 8 April 2017

2manydjs is the alternative electro rock project from David and Stephen Dewaele. The brothers from Belgium are also members of the band, Soulwax. In 2002 The New York Times voted their 2manydjs album, As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2, the best popular music album of the year. Soulwax’s eighth studio album, From Deewee was released last month. It’s a 48-minute session played by seven musicians – and was recorded in just one take!

7. The Jesus and Mary Chain in Belfast, 8 April 2017

Jim and William Reid spent five years living on the dole in Scotland, wrote and recorded songs at home, and meticulously planned the image and sound of their dream band. The brothers formed The Jesus and Mary Chain in 1983. In their formative years, they struggled to get gigs and would arrive at clubs, claiming to be the support act. They’d then play a very short set and leave quickly thereafter.

After releasing their début single, “Upside Down” in 1984, the band started gaining increasing media attention. They released their début album, Psychocandy in 1985 to critical acclaim. The Jesus and Mary Chain’s seventh album, Damage and Joy was released last month. It’s the band’s first album in 19 years. 8. Thurston Moore in London, 8 April 2017

Thurston Moore is probably best known as the singer, songwriter and guitar player for the highly influential New York noise rock band, Sonic Youth. Thurston and his wife, Kim Gordon (also the bass player for Sonic Youth) announced their separation in 2011, which resulted in the indefinite hiatus of the band and the start of Moore’s solo career.

Thurston plans to release his fifth solo album, Rock n Roll Consciousness, at the end of this month. Get your Thurston Moore tickets to see why he’s ranked as one of Rolling Stone's “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”. He’ll be performing in London at the Barbican Hall on 8 April 2017.

9. Matt Bianco in London, 9 April 2017

Matt Bianco was formed in 1983 by Mark Reilly, Danny White and Kito Poncioni. The band grew in popularity during the mid-1980s with their jazz, funk and Latin flavoured music. The band has released 12 studio albums as well as a 5-track EP, The Things You Love, in 2016 – shortly before the death of keyboard player and songwriter, Mark Fisher.

10. Nathan Carter in Edinburgh, 9 April 2017

Nathan Carter’s musical talents surfaced at a very young age. He started playing the accordion when he was four years old and won the All Ireland Title for Traditional Singing at the age of ten. He moved to Ireland after turning 18, where he made a name for himself as one of the biggest Country and Irish stars – a special genre of country music with Celtic influences.
