About Sleep
First Releases
The band recorded two albums: EP “Dejection” on the label Profane Existence and self-issued EP “Unclean”. Then Choi left the band and Justin Marler took his place. The group changed its name to “Sleep”. Their debut disc, titled “Volume One”, was released in 1991. Very quickly, the group has collected a good number of fans on the undeveloped metal scene at that time. After recording the first album, the guitarist Justin Marler left the group and became a monk, and “Sleep” recorded a mini-album titled “Volume Two”, which was informally issued on the label Off the Disk.
Problems with Labels
The next disc, recorded on the Razors Edge Studios, was sent to the independent record label Earache as a demo. The label immediately signed the band and issued the demo in the form of “Sleep's Holy Mountain”. In this album, the group showed their love for the music of the 70s,
Black Sabbath and Orange’s amplifiers. After the edition of the album, the group attracted the interest of the label London Records, and “Sleep” signed on it. At this time, Earache released the first tribute to “Black Sabbath” with “Snowblind” song by “Sleep”.
