Toyah Ann Willcox, born on May 18, 1958, in Birmingham, is the English actress and singer, who started on the punk scene, and then became one of the most prominent figures of the British new wave. Between 1977 and 1983 she played in the band “Toyah”, signed with an independent Safari Records label. In 1979, they issued their debut single, “Victims of the Riddle”. About Toyah Willcox
“Toyah” group
In 1981, live album “Toyah Toyah Toyah”, recorded in Lafayette Club, went out. The album, composed of the most famous songs of the early repertoire (“Victims of the Riddle”, Danced”, “Race Through Space”, “Leya”), climbed to No. 17 in the UK Album Charts. The first hit of “Toyah” group was the EP “Four From Toyah”, rising to No. 4. The main track here was “Its A Mystery” – a cover version of a song originally recorded by Keith Hale and his band “Blood Donor”. Then, followed “I Want to Be Free” (No. 8 UK, No. 10 Ireland, No. 10 South Africa), which is included in “Anthem” album (No. 2) The next chart-hit was the “Four More From Toyah” EP (No. 14, 1981, the main track – “Good Morning Universe”). “The Changeling” was closer to the gothic rock than to the punk. It rose to No. 6 on the list and became the latest Top-10 hit of the singer. In late 1981, she let out a double live album, “Warrior Rock: Toyah on Tour” (No. 20, 1981). In early 1982, she received The Brits Award in the “Singer of the Year” category. After the release of “Love Is The Law” (No. 28, 1983) the ensemble collapsed.
Solo Career
Her first solo album, was addressed to the American audience, and clearly did not contain any trace of the old theatrical aggressiveness. The album “Minx” rose to No. 24 in the UK Album Charts, but had no success in the US. A conceptual “Prostitute” (1988) critics considered the most experimental and non-commercial of her solo albums. Critics praised also the disc “Dreamchild”. Toyah’s favorite disc is “Ophelia's Shadow”(1991).
