Television Tickets

“Television” is the American rock band, one of the pioneers of the new wave and punk rock. Despite the fact that “Television” failed to get any mainstream success, they have had a significant impact on New York and the world rock scene. “Television” was a part of the early punk scene in New York, associated with the club CBGB, along with such artists as Patti Smith, “Suicide”, “Ramones”. However, in contrast to the deliberate minimalism of “Ramones”, “Television” used more sophisticated musical structures – the guitars of Verlaine and Lloyd, long and complicated structures of songs. “Television” had a considerable influence on new wave and post-punk, and became one of the first groups of the so-called art-punk.

About Television

History

The primary reason for the creation of “Television” was the friendship between Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell. After moving to New York, they founded the band “The Neon Boys”, which was renamed into “Television” after Richard Lloyd’s coming. Soon “Television” offered Hilly Kristal, the Director of CGBG club, to give them the opportunity to play there on a regular basis. In this way, “Television” became the first group performing there, thus initiating an extensive punk rock scene of CBGB in the second half of the 70s. Gradually, their performances began to attract considerable attention.

Changes in the Lineup

Initially, songwriting in the group was equally divided between Verlaine and Hull (Lloyd acted occasionally as a co-author). Gradually, however, Verlaine began to try to become a full-fledged leader of the group. Hull eventually began to perform only one “Blank Generation”, until Verlaine banned its performance. As a result, Richard Hell decided to quit the group and later founded his own band “Richard Hell & The Voidoids”. The new bassist was Fred Smith from “Blondie”.

Works

The first release of “Television” was the single “Little Johnny Jewel” (1975). In 1977, the group issued their debut long play “Marquee Moon”, and despite modest sales, it received very good criticism. The album is considered the main product of the group: in 2000, it hit the 83rd line in the list of music channel VH1 “100 greatest rock 'n' roll album,” and in 2003 – the 123rd in the list of 500 greatest albums according to the magazine Rolling Stone. In addition, “Marquee Moon” was on the 16th place (2007) in the ranking of albums of all time according to Rate Your Music. The second album, “Adventure” (1978) caused much less violent reaction. Their third and the last studio album “Television” appeared in 1992.
