Squeeze Tickets

“Squeeze” is the English group of the new wave, in which punk, pub, glam, and rock art themes were combined with classic pop traditions of the 60s. Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook (the first one wrote the lyrics, the second – music) never concealed the fact that their idols were Lennon and McCartney. The band's history began when Chris Difford placed on the window of a music store an ad and the other aspiring author and guitarist Glenn Tilbrook answered it. In March 1974, they signed up the keyboardist Jools Holland and the drummer Paul Gunn. The quartet called itself “Squeeze” – in honor of the album of “Velvet Underground” and soon, they gained fame on the London pub scene, though, they played music soft and frilly with little resemblance to a typical pub-rock.

About Squeeze

International Success

The first great international success of the group caused the second album “Cool for Cats” (two singles from it, the title track and “Up the Junction” became hits), followed by a mini-album “6 Squeeze Songs Crammed Into One Ten-Inch Record EP”. Shortly after the release of their second album, Kakoulli was dismissed from the staff and was replaced by John Bentley. Impressed by the compliments (music critics on both sides of the ocean have already called them “the new Lennon-McCartney”), Difford and Tilbrook tried to create their own “Sergeant”, writing “East Side Story” album in 1981. Released in the summer of 1981, it gathered great reviews, but did not bring the expected commercial breakthrough, rising to 19th place in the UK and up to the 44th – in the United States.

Hits

The single “Tempted” (where Carrack sang) has failed in England, but became the first US Top 50 hit. It was followed by the British hit “Labelled With Love”. Carrack left in late 1981. He was replaced by Don Snow, the pianist with a classical education.

Dismissal of the Band and a couple of Reincarnations

Since the founding of “Squeeze”, they toured and recorded incessantly: first signs of their creative fatigue appeared in the album “Sweets From a Stranger”. Frustrated by the relative lack of success, Difford and Tilbrook decided to disband the group six months later. After this, a couple of reincarnations followed. Their latest work appeared in 2015 under the name “Cradle to the Grave”.
