One of the richest people in rock music, the participant of the legendary “Genesis” and jazz-rock “Brand X”, Phil Collins (Phillip David Charles Collins) was born on January 30, 1951 in Chiswick, England. One of the most considerable moments in his life happened in 1970 when Phil responded to the announcement in the musical magazine “Melody Maker”. “The group looks for the drummer with good feeling of acoustics" - the announcement said.
About Phil Collins
“Genesis”
The group was “Genesis”, organized by graduates of a private school. Phil was at once accepted to the group. When in 1974 the founder Peter Gabriel left the group, there was a question of a new vocalist. The collective listened to more than four hundred applicants, but eventually the group decided to give the microphone to the drummer, Phil Collins. And this moment became one of the most significant not only for Phil, but for the whole group.
Solo Career
Phil began his solo career in 1981 alongside with the active participation in “Genesis”. Collins was 30 when the first track “In the Air Tonight” became a hit No. 2 in the English charts. In the USA, the song was strongly included into Top 20.
The debut solo album of Collins “Face Value” became more successful than any of the disks of “Genesis” before. It should be noted that as soon as Phil took the place of the vocalist in “Genesis”, the group began to try to obtain the increasing commercial success, at the same time, however, without rolling down to a frank pop rock. In particular, the album of 1978 “And Then There Were Three...” became gold, and “Duke” was even better.
In 1980, “Misunderstanding” got in American Top-15, and amazing “Please Don't Ask” became actually Collins's confession set to music.
Second Album
The next album “Hello, I Must Be Going” (1982) became a logical continuation of the first disk both in musical stylistics, and in lyrics. However, the endured sufferings and searches of an exit from sincere crisis became the main subject of the album. The cover version of the hit of 1966 of legendary “Supremes’” “You Can't Hurry Love” became the next hit, and all album, as well as the first one became multiplatinum.
Unsuccessful Album
In Geneva Collins records the most unsuccessful album “Dance Into The Light” (1996). It became not only the return to the musical style of eighties, but, maybe, it was the first serious test for his successful career in general.
