Acquaintance

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe met for the first time on August 19, 1981 in the London musical shop where Tennant came to learn how to connect the synthesizer bought to a house stereo system. Lowe promised to help with a synthesizer and took Tennant's phone. In three weeks both met and, having found similar aspirations and the general love to dance music, decided to combine the efforts. Lowe at that time worked in an architectural firm, and Tennant, who had tried a set of professions in ten years, worked as a musical journalist. The first several years were spent on writing music. One of the first finished compositions was “Jealousy” which the duet had officially recorded only in 1990. From the very beginning, they defined that they will play electronic music, which is guided by the Italian disco and electro. Great impact on the musicians was produced by the New York club music, which directly gave idea of the name of the group, though initially the collective was called “West End”, in honor of the elite district of London West End.

Turning Point

1983 was a turning point for the group, when Tennant who was then the editor of the musical magazine “Smash Hits” went to cover “The Police’s” tours in New York as the correspondent. He used this trip for a meeting with the producer Bobbie Orlando who agreed to record the young group. In 1984 — 85 there were first singles of “Pet Shop Boys”— “West End Girls”, “One More Chance”, and “Opportunities”.

Afterword

After success of their debut single, the group’s career has sharply gone uphill. Since then, they have managed to write down a set of albums and to act on a huge number of club platforms. They did not subdue only stadiums. But exclusively at their own will, as there were enough offers to do this. As the participant of “Pet Shop Boys” told in one of the interview: “We play the disco music, but not a rock'n'roll”.
