About Michael Kiwanuka
Biography
Michael Samuel Kiwanuka was born on May 3, 1987, in a family of Ugandan refugees. During his school years, he was a big fan of various rock bands, like
Radiohead,
The Offspring, Blur and Nirvana. Michael also played in different school rock cover bands. Kiwanuka studied jazz at the Royal Academy of Music in London and pop music – at Westminster University.
Early Career
His music style (or even combining different styles) is greatly influenced by the work of such artists as Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Morbid Angel, Bill Withers, Pops Staples, and many others, who performed in different styles: from the soul and blues to folk-rock and gospel music. Michael worked with Chipmunk and Bashy as a session musician. After he started to perform as a solo artist in London clubs, he finally got noticed.
Recognition
In 2011, Michael Kiwanuka signed the contract with the Polydor Records, with the support of which he released two EPs - Tell Me a Tale and I’m Getting Ready. He hit the third position on the BRITS Critics Choice shortlist and was announced one of the best young musicians in 2011. A year later, Michael Kiwanuka won the BBC Sound of 2012. Michael Kiwanuka has released two studio albums. The debut one, Home Again (2012) got #4 in the UK, while the second album Love and Hate (2016), featuring the song Black Man in a White World, hit #1!
