Good Charlotte is a pop-rock group founded in 1996 in Waldorf, America by identical brothers Joel and Benji Madden. They were initially joined by other three high-school mates, bassist Paul Thomas, drummer Aaron Escolopio (later replaced by Dean Butterwoth, ex-member of Morissey) and guitarist Billy Martin. The Maddens kept the flame alive for several years and released some hit-chart singles with Good Charlotte before falling into a hiatus which ended this year, with a promising comeback.
About Good Charlotte
It all started with a basement gig
Joel and Benji were into music since they were very young. They would come home after classes and go straight into their room, songwriting and playing for hours. This happened when they were teenagers, but they pretty much had an idea of what they wanted to do despite their young and restless spirits. “Good Charlotte” came after a high-school reunion between old mates, while the band’s name was inspired by a children’s book. The group’s first audience of 20 people was on a small basement gig, proudly playing their own songs.
Their self-entitled debut studio album was released in 2000, although before this event, the band started making a name for itself playing on HFStival (WHFS annual rock show) in prior years. Good Charlotte’s popularity continued growing and by the time the group released “The Young and Hopeless” in 2002, the boys already had a recognisable name. Singles “Anthem” and “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” boosted the pop-rock group on global charts while the album sold almost 5 million copies.
The road goes on
Four years later, Good Charlotte released the soon-to-be number three on Billboard charts album, “The Chronicles of Life and Death”. After other three albums and two compilations, Good Charlotte took a long break in 2010. The Madden brothers tried to go on their own musical path releasing “Greetings from California” in 2014, with no great success, though, and they reunited the old group for 2016’s Youth Authority.
