About Goo Goo Dolls
How they formed
In 1986 school friends, Robby Takac and George Tutuska, met John Rzeznik while John was playing in a band with George's cousin. The trio formed and in a hasty decision became known as the Goo Goo Dolls.
Originally Takac was the lead vocalist for the band's first two albums, but when Rzeznik was featured on five tracks on the third album the title passed onto him.
Their first three albums saw moderate success with a single being picked up for the movie “Freddy's Dead, The Final Nightmare”. However, it wasn't until 1993 when their song “We Are The Normal” got picked up by MTV and their single “Fallin' Down” was featured in the Paul Shorey film “Son In Law”.
In 1994, George was kicked from the band and Mike Malinin stepped in.
Superstardom kicked in
Rzeznik wrote a song in 1997 for the City of Angels soundtrack called “Iris”. It is this song that propelled them into super stardom staying on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart for 18 weeks and at No.1 for 4 weeks. It received 3 Grammy Nominations and is reported to have saved Rzeznik from quitting the band.
The band followed up on the success of Iris' fame with 6 Award Winning albums. Including awards won for the singles Slide, Black Balloon, Here Is Gone and Give A Little Bit. The band won for Artist of the Year Adult Hit Radio in 2005 at the Radio Music Awards. John Rzeznik was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2008, and the band was inducted into the RockWalk Hall of Fame in 2013.
Malinin departed in 2013 after three very successful tours co-headlining with Matchbox 20, one with Run River North and co-headlining with
Daughtry.
