Explosions in the Sky are a 4-piece rock band. They are known for their music being almost entirely instrumental. They usually play with just three guitars and drums but occasionally add a bass guitar. Their live shows are very popular, being very lively and full of feeling! Lately, they have added a fifth member to the group, specifically for live performances. The group's name was originally Breaker Morant, but they changed it to Explosions in the Sky in 1999.
About Explosions in the Sky
Early Years
In 1999 the band became Explosions in the Sky in Texas, taking the new name from a comment one of the members made about a firework display! The current band members are a drummer, Chris Hrasky from Illinois, and Michael James, Munaf Rayani and Mark Smith, all from Texas.
In 2000 they released their first album, 'How Strange, Innocence' and distributed it in the CD-R format. On the strength of this, they were signed up by Temporary Residence Limited.
Acclaim and Success
The 2nd album got released in 2001 by the band, and they started to get some media attention. This was partly due to rumours linking it to the 9/11 attacks although the band strongly denied this. It was because of the artwork on the cover displaying a plane and with the title. 'This plane will crash tomorrow.' Actually, the album was released before 9/11!
By now the band was also receiving a lot of attention for their live performances. They also wrote the soundtrack for the film 'Friday Night Lights' in 2004. Since then, their music has featured in many soundtracks for movies and TV shows.
They have recorded another five albums: The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place in 2003, The Rescue in 2005, All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, 2007, Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, 2011 and most recently, The Wilderness, 2016. They are also touring the United States and Canada extensively.
