“Electric Light Orchestra” (ELO) is the British rock group from Birmingham founded by Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood in 1970. The group was especially popular in the 1970s-1980s. The original structure of “ELO” included Roy Wood (vocals, violoncello, oboe, guitar), Jeff Lynne (vocals, piano, guitar), and Bev Bevan (percussions). All of them were members of the popular group “Move”, but they decided to stir up the new project for bigger self-expression.

About Electric Light Orchestra

General Issues

“Electric Light Orchestra” has created the style, unlike others, experimenting in various musical directions. The group has existed until 1986 then Jeff Lynne dismissed it. “ELO” has issued 11 studio albums during the period between 1971 and 1986, one album in 2001 and one in 2015. “ELO” was created to meet ardent desire to write classical pop music. Jeff Lynne who also wrote all original compositions of the group and was a producer of the albums resolved all organizational matters. The first success the group faced in the United States where they were introduced as “The English guys with big violins”. To the middle of the 1970s they became one of the most sold bands.

The Beginning

Having sworn to surpass Beatles’ “I Am The Walrus”, they finished an experimental debut set with the assistance of Bill Hunt (French horn) and Steve Woolam (violin). Despite their high ambitions, the sound of the group was still similar to creativity of “Move”, and generally, the album was sold out quite successfully. The composition “10538 Overture” from it got to the British Top 10.

Changes in the Structure

After the first disk, it became clear that two captains (Roy and Jeff) would not be able to steer the ship. Wood started the new “Wizzard” project together with Hunt and McDowell. In “ELO”, Craig and Woolam were replaced by Mike Edwards and Colin Walker, Richard Tandy and Mike de Albuquerque joined the team.

“ELO II”

In the changed structure, the group finished the record of “ELO II”. The executed in a new manner, composition “Roll Over Beethoven”, brought considerable success in world charts and became the long-term concert favourite. Then other hits followed. Having let out an album “Balance of Power” (1986), the team actually curtailed the activity. Bevan has brought together the other group, having given it the name “ELO II”. Only 15 years after “Balance of Power” Jeff Lynne reanimated the sign “Electric Light Orchestra” and wrote down a new album “Zoom” (2001) and “Alone in the Universe” (2015).
