John Cooper Clarke was born on January 25, 1949 in Salford, Lancashire. As a teenager, John became interested in the movement of mods; then he worked as the assistant construction engineer, a technician in the laboratory of the University of Salford, typesetter. After a failed marriage, and some time spent in Dorset, Clarke returned to Manchester, where he began performing in clubs with public readings of poetry. His first popularity came to him in the punk scene in 1977, when he released the single “Psycle Sluts” recorded by the producer Martin Hennett on Rabid Records. Read more
