Group Formation

Pupils of the Californian city high school Chino Moreno and Abe Cunningham made friends. For some time Moreno was a drummer, and Stephen — a guitarist, but when Chino heard Abe's playing, he recognized that his friend plays drums better than he does. Moreno took measures that Abe and Stephen began to play together. At first, 18-year-old Stephen looked at younger Abe watchfully, but after listening of his friends’ playing, he began to insist on creation of the group with enthusiasm. One more friend of Chino was accepted as the bass guitarist, and Moreno became a vocalist, though had no experience in the area of singing.

Debut

The collective drew attention of representatives of Maverick Records, and in 1995 this label let out their debut disk — “Adrenaline”. When listening to the album, the great influence of “The Smashing Pumpkins” is evident. Within the next two years, “Deftones” was constantly noticed in tours, in support of the first album, playing with such collectives as “Korn”, Ozzy Osbourne and “L7”. The team also received short attention of the dominating mass media when during one of the concerts there was a revolt in Tempe, Ariz. Nevertheless, the group was actually ignored by MTV and “rocker” radio, but despite it the album "Adrenaline" continued to strive for the status of gold.

Achievements

In 2003, the group begins to work on the 4th album under the working name “Lovers”. Renamed into “Deftones”, the disk left in 2003. In the first week, 167.000 copies were sold, and the album took the 2nd place in Billboard 200 chart. It was in Billboard Top 100 within 9 weeks thanks to the success of the first single “Minerva”.
