About Deacon Blue

The Early Years

Ricky Ross, once a school teacher, was the inspiration behind the band and also wrote most of their songs. Their first whiff of success was in 1986 when they were on a compilation cassette of new Glasgow bands, including Wet Wet Wet and Hue and Cry, with a track called 'Take The Saints Away.' They released their first album, 'Raintown,' in 1987, the title being a reference to Glasgow. It was quite a success, commercially, reaching number 14 in the UK album charts. The album also contained the singles 'Dignity', 'Chocolate Girl', and 'Loaded,' each of which had their own success in the singles charts. The second album was released in 1989 and was entitled 'When The World Knows Your Name.' This is their most successful album so far and reached number 1 in the UK album charts.

Then Until Now

1991 saw the release of the album 'Fellow Hoodlums' which was another great success, reaching number 2 in the charts. The next album, in 1993, was 'Whatever You Say, Say Nothing' and this marked a certain change of style for the band. It was well received critically but not as successful commercially, reaching number 4 in the UK album charts. The band actually split up in 1994 but re-united in 1999 and a new album was made, ‘Walking Back Home.' There was another album, 'Homesick', in 2001.The band have continued to the present day, though Graeme Kelling tragically died of cancer in 2004. In 2014 they released another studio album, 'A New House.' They now still tour and perform although this is said to be 'on a part-time basis’!
