Craig Joseph Charles was born on July 11, 1964, in Liverpool. Today, he is not only internationally known as an actor, but as an independent musician as well. Charles’ career has been really extensive and diversified. He is a sparkling DJ, actor, author and even a journalist. His life has been closely connected with poetry since the early years. He was only 12 years old when he won a national poetry competition. A little later, Charles managed to turn performing his own poems into a profession.

A Musician

Craig Charles played and sang in many bands, such as Watt 4 (1980), Craig Charles and the Beat Burglars (1989), and The Sons of Gordon Gekko (1989). He founded the Fantasy Funk Band that includes renowned musicians. Charles recorded two 3-CD studio albums. The first one, The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club (2012, 2013, 2014), features such unforgettable songs like Killing, Hard Work, and Dragging Me Down, and a lot more. The second album, Craig Charles Funk and Soul Classics, was released in 2015.

The Start of the TV Career

Charles started as a performance poet in a cabaret. His way of conveying the ideas and emotions, with a small but elegant touch of sarcastic humour, soon inspired huge interest to his works. It did not take TV producers much time to see Charles’ potential. He first appeared on television in the mid-80s. He worked simultaneously with a number of channels, such as BBC1, BBC2 and Channel 4 and got known immediately.

An Actor and a Presenter

In 1988, Craig Charles was offered to act as Dave Lister in comedy series Red Dwarf. The real fame finally found him. He starred in Red Dwarf for all 11 years. Red Dwarf is coming back on screens in 2016. Charles another big acting role is Lloyd Mullaney in Coronation Street and its spin-off Steve & Lloyd's Streetcar Stories. Alongside, with these huge projects Craig Charles found time to present a number of game shows, among which Robot Wars, What's That Noise?, and many others.
