About Chris Cornell

Musical Family and Strong Bonds

Cornell was one of six children. His older brother Peter and two of his younger sisters, Katy and Suzy, were all in a band called Inflatable Soule who were around during the 90's. But, it all started for Chris in the 1980's, when he become a part of the cover band, The Shemps, and met up Kim Thayil (current member of Soundgarden) and Hiro Yamamoto (former Soundgarden member). It was after the break-up of the Shemps that Soundgarden was formed by Cornell, Thayil, and Yamamoto in 1984.

Solo and Group Successes

Soundgarden was a major success for Cornell between the years of 1984-1997. Their debut album, Ultamega OK (1988) earned them a Grammy Award nomination in 1990. A further four albums were released during their time together, including Superunknown (1994) which reached number 1 in the Billboard 200 and featured several hit songs, including "Spoonman" and "Black Hole Sun", and earned the band global recognition. But, in 1997 the band decided to part ways due to differences in their creative direction. After a short solo stint between 1998-2000, Cornell joined rock group, Audioslave, in 2001 where he wrote the lyrics for all of their material. Releasing three albums over their six years together, Audioslave received three Grammy nominations and became the first ever American rock band to perform an open-air concert in Cuba. Cornell now works both as a solo artist and once again as a member of Soundgarden since the band reformed in 2010.
