About Black Grape

It’s Great When You’re Straight… Yeah

Black Grape was formed in 1993 by former Happy Mondays members Bez and Shaun Ryder.  In 1995 the group had signed with Radioactive Records and released its first album “It's Great When You're Straight... Yeah”, which has made it to the first position in the UK Albums Chart and ended up being certified platinum in the United Kingdom in spring 1996. One of the band’s singles, "Kelly's Heroes" was about the society's obsession with idols and celebrities. It had lots to do with Ryder's own hero worshiping of people he now saw totally differently. The album “It's Great When You're Straight... Yeah” received positive feedback from critics in the United Kingdom, but the band still made a little impact in the States. Nevertheless, Lars Ulrich (Metallica drummer) has named it as one of his favourite albums of 1996. The following album, called “Stupid Stupid Stupid” was less successful, but still got certified gold in Britain in January 1998.

Fall Out and Reunion

The same year the group fell apart as Ryder fired the rest of the band members during the tour. In 2015, the group signed to Creation Management, which is directed by Simon Fletcher and Alan McGee and announced a reunion tour to celebrate 20 years since the album “It's Great When You're Straight... Yeah”  was released. Just recently, the band released a song "We are England" for the UEFA Euro 2016 to support the England national football team.
