Career

Just like her sister Lata Mangeshkar, Asha was trained in classical music, but it always used to be just a matter of time before she would turn to playback singing. Her debut was a 1948 movie Chunaria. However, it took her many years to make it to the top. Just between 1948 and 1957, Asha sang many songs, but most of them were for small, indistinct movies. Nevertheless, she got her big breakthrough in 1957 with O.P. Nayyar, a composer, in the movies Naya Daur and Tumsa Nahin Dekha. The following year, three more movies with Asha’s voice were released: Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Howrah Bridge and Lajwanti. And that’s when Asha’s real success has started.

The Change

Over time, Asha's singing style has changed and evolved into her own distinctive style. In the 1970s Asha started a new relationship (both professional and personal) with Rahul Dev Burman. A master of disco and pop music of the 70s, Burman and Asha made their greatest hits with movies Hum Kisise Kum Naheen, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Jawani Diwani and Haré Raama Haré Krishna. This time again she got stereotyped for singing mostly Western-styled songs. But 1981 more lyrical aspect of Asha’s voice was revealed. Her collaboration with a composer Khayyam led to revealing some of her most amazing songs in the movie Umrao Jaan and Permission. The last movie actually got her the National Award. Asha Bhosle also released few Indian pop music albums, which were very successful too. Recently, this beautiful woman in her 70s was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World-Music Album.
