The story of the Show
The story told in the musical is of a hideously disfigured ghost terrorizing the cast and crew at the French Opera House, while mentoring a chorus girl, Christine. The lead soprano is driven mad with terror so decides to leave. Angered by his unrequited love, the Phantom kidnaps Christine with the hope of making her his eternal bride. The story then hinges on whether the Vicomte, Raoul, will be able to save her.
The Phantom of the Opera premiered in the West End in 1986 at Her Majesty's Theatre, with British actor Michael Crawford in the title role and Sarah Bright man playing Christine.
In one of The Phantom of the Opera reviews, The Sunday Express said after the opening night, “Andrew Lloyd Weber’s new musical The Phantom of The Opera is a gorgeous operatic extravaganza that is a thrill to the blood and a sensual feast for the eye.”
The longest-running Show in Broadway
Now, it is the second longest-running musical in the world, behind Les Miserables. In 2011 there was a 25th-anniversary performance at The Royal Albert Hall followed in 2012 by a 25th-anniversary tour of the UK and Ireland.
The show opened on Broadway in 1988 at the Majestic Theatre. It continues to play at the Majestic to this day and became the first musical in Broadway history to top 10,000 performances in 2012.
By 2011, it had been seen by over 130 million people in 145 cities across 27 countries and has won numerous awards worldwide.
