The play was originally a short radio play, called Three Blind Mice, which was based on the true story of a young boy who died while in the foster care of a farmer and his wife in 1945.
When Agatha Christie wrote The Mousetrap, she gave the rights to her grandson as a birthday present, and because of these rights, apart from the West End production, only one other production can be performed annually in the UK. Also, no film can be made of the play until the West End production has been closed for at least six months.
The Story
So, a brief synopsis of the plot! A murder has taken place, and the action takes place at Monkswell Manor, a large house that has been recently converted into a guesthouse by newly-weds, Giles and Mollie Ralston. Initially, they think that it is nothing to do with them but then a police officer arrives to question their guests who are acting slightly strangely in various ways. The plot twists and turns from there until the final enthralling twist at the end.
Over the years, The Mousetrap has had many reviews, of course, and in one of The Mousetrap reviews, Agatha Christie even said that “it is time for it to finish. The play keeps on going strong, however, and is still a big tourist attraction for visitors to London”.
The cast and creative team are changed annually.
