The Commitments Musical was a hit film back in 1991 about a group of youngsters in Dublin who decide to form an R&B group. The band gets together but ends up consisting entirely of white musicians who have little or no experience in their chosen genre. Eventually, their raw talent and confidence win them some notoriety, but the price of fame soon rears its ugly head and starts to rip apart everything they have worked so hard at achieving.
The script was based on the novel by the famous Irish writer Roddy Doyle.
The Commitments Success Story
Now, after a highly successful and record-breaking two-year run in the West End, at the Palace Theatre, The Commitments is hitting the road for an extensive UK and Ireland tour, starting this month.
The Commitments stage musical opened to massive critical acclaim in the West End of London in 2013. In one of The Commitments reviews, The Sunday Times said, “The Commitments is the musical we've been waiting for,” and the Daily Mail stated that the show is “a fabulous fun night out.”
It was adapted for the stage by Roddy Doyle and directed by Caroline Jay Ranger. There are some fantastic soul classics in the show including, Try a Little Tenderness, River Deep Mountain High, Mustang Sally, I Heard it Through The Grapevine and many more.
The Great Cast And The Creative Team
Many of the cast from the West End will also be going on the road with the show. Leading cast members include Brian Gilligan who plays the starring role of Deco, Andrew Linnie playing Jimmy Rabbitte and Kevin Kennedy playing Jimmy's dad. Kevin is well known to Coronation Street fans when, for years, he played the simple bin man, Curly Watts.
The three girls in the group, the Commitments, will be played by Amy Penston, who takes the role of Natalie, her sister, Leah Penston plays Imelda and Christina Tedders plays Bernie.
Apart from Roddy Doyle and Caroline Jay Ranger, others in the creative team include musical supervisor Alan Williams and Ann Yee, staging and choreography.
