Dirty Dancing tickets

Dirty Dancing Musical was a 1987 film starring the late Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. Written by Eleanor Bergstein and directed by Emile Ardolino it was initially a low budget film but soon became a massive box office hit earning over $210 million by 2010. It was also the first film ever to sell over a million copies on video.

Dirty Dancing Story

Set in 1963, the story centers on a 17-year-old girl, Frances 'Baby' Houseman and her family who are at a holiday resort for their summer vacation. At the resort, on the staff, there is a group of dancers with the lead dancer being Johnny Castle, a young man from the wrong side of the tracks. Baby gets involved with the dancers and also Johnny, much to the consternation of her father. The story continues with various intrigues along the way but mainly centers on baby and her relationship with Johnny, not least him teaching her how to dance.

The Show’s Appraisal

The musical was first adapted for the stage in Australia, in 2004. This version was also written by Eleanor Bergstein. It received mixed reviews but was a great commercial success. Then followed sellout productions in Germany and London's West End, where the show opened at the Aldwych Theatre in 2006. By 2011, over a million people had seen the West End show and it was selling out six months in advance. The West End show closed in 2011, and Dirty Dancing then went on the UK and Irish tour, before returning to the West End's Piccadilly Theatre in 2013. In 2014 the show embarked on another nationwide tour of the UK and Ireland. This tour is continuing at the moment, and upcoming shows are in Northampton, Stoke, Reading, Wolverhampton, London, Southend and Newcastle, taking it through to the end of January 2017. More dates at other venues have been added, carrying the show well into 2017. Dirty Dancing reviews are good with The Observer saying, “The biggest live theatre sensation of all time” and The Mail on Sunday saying. “Magnificent.”
