About The Play An Inspector Calls
The Story
An Inspector Calls is a play with three acts, and the action takes place on a single night in April 2012. A wealthy family, the Birlings, is visited at their home in the Midlands, by a man who introduces himself as Inspector Goole. He proceeds to question them about the suicide of a young working-class girl by the name of Eva Smith and discovers that the family is responsible for her exploitation and abandonment which led to her suicide.
The play is considered to be Priestley's way of criticizing the English class structure and his way of expressing his socialist beliefs.
The Play’s Appraisal
In recent years there has been a successful revival of the multi-award winning play by English director, Stephen Daldry, firstly in 1992 for the National Theatre and subsequently on a national tour of the UK in 2011/2012.In one of An Inspector Calls reviews, The Daily Express said the play was, “visually astonishing” and the Sunday Express called it, “A riveting examination of conscience and class.”
Now, An Inspector Calls returns to London's West End, to the
Playhouse Theatre, for a strictly limited season, starting on November 4th.
