Pixies belong to the pioneers of the alternative movement of the 90s, as they applied a lot of different styles to make the unique sound of their own. They took punk, indie, guitar rock, classic pop, surf, and gave way to such outstanding rock groups as Nirvana. The team appeared in Boston in 1986. Charles Thompson was thrown out of college. So he persuaded his friend Joey Santiago to join him in more interesting occupation, i.e. in music.
About Pixies
Band Formation
Kim Deal (she was the bassist) was invited in the company. And she, in her turn, brought the drummer David Lovering. After this, Thompson took the alias Black Francis and named the group Pixies randomly (the name chosen at random in the dictionary, and it meant “little mischievous elf”).
First Steps
The staff becam popular in the Boston's environs without any problems and soon was invited to act on a warming up of “Throwing Muses”. This joint action attracted the attention of a local producer Gary Smith, who suggested trying in the studio. They created an 18-song demo “The Purple Tape”. After this, a contract with 4AD Records followed and the issue of the mini-album “Come On Pilgrim”, for which they selected 8 tracks from the probe.
Full-Length Albums
In 1988, they issued their first full-length “Surfer Rosa” disc. The 1988 they ended by signing a contract with the label Elektra Records, where they issued their second long-play “Doolittle” which had a cleaner sound. The singles “Monkey Gone That Heaven” and “Here Comes Your Man” hit the US modern-rock Top 10 and the UK’s ones.
A Pause
After this, Deal and Francis began to quarrel often, the tension in the group increased so that at the beginning of 1990, “Pixies” made a pause. In summer, the band resumed its activities and recorded the third album. “Bossanova” with differed less sharp and relatively atmospheric sound, and the lack of songs by Kim Deal.
Dissolution
Thanks to the hits “Velouria” and “Dig For Fire”, the disc has become very popular among American students. In addition, the album was ranked the third in the UK charts. Later, Thompson officially announced about the dissolution of “Pixies”. Charles began a solo career under the name Frank Black and Kim Deal returned to “Breeders”.
Reunion
More than 10 years the fans of the band were languishing in anticipation of the reunion, and only in 2003 the musicians heed their aspirations, tried to jam together once again. At the end of 2013 – the beginning of 2014, the band released three EPs (“EP1”, “EP2”, “ER3”), which, after all, were united in the album “Indie Cindy”.
