Level 42 Tickets

This is a typical English rock group of the “new wave” formed in Manchester. Originally, it was a lineup performing typical “funk-fusion”, but gradually, “Level-42” moved to the more popular form of fashionable youth music at that time. From the very beginning, the band contained a bass guitar player and vocalist Mark King, musician Phil Gould, musician Boon Gould, and keyboard player Mike Lindup. Before the first single, “Love Meeting Love”, Lindup was the vocalist enhancing his solo keyboards parties with his falsetto. King tried hard to master the percussions, but in the end, he had to take the bass guitar and vocal party.

About Level 42

First Release

The first release of the group was of “The Early Tapes”. It was followed by the singles “Starchild” and “The return of the Handsome Rugged Man”. In 1981, their debut release “Level-42” came out. It hit the British Top 20 and more than one and a half million copies of it were sold. This was the collection of soul and rhythm and blues compositions. The singles included, have also been put in the UK charts. In a year, Mark King has been recognized as the best bass guitar player of the year according to the polls of “Blues and soul” magazine. The elements of soul and general Negro melodies became one of the leading components of the group's music.

World Fame

In 1984, the single “The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up)” was in the Top British 10. In 1985, the real classic record of the group, “World Machine”, appeared. African musician and producer Wally Badarou supported the group in this work and this fact could not remain unnoticed in the music: Negro melodies under the Jazz rock are very graceful. The disk brought the world glory to the group and the song “Lessons in Love” and “Something About You” became transatlantic hits. The next recordings “Running in the Family” (1987) and “Staring at the Sun” (1988) were well accepted in England, but received rather modest feedback in America.

Style and New Lineup

At the peak of their popular beyond the UK, the company represented the type of music, which can be called “white funk”, included in the youth fashion of a “new wave”, along with such representatives, as Thomas Dolby, Peter Gabriel, “Shakatak” or “Simply Red”. In 1987, both brothers, Phil and Boon Goulds, left the group. Instead of them appeared the musicians Gary Husband and Alan Murphy. Alan did not stay long in the team and after recording “Staring at the Sun” and the subsequent tour died from AIDS. One of the famous modern guitarist, Allan Holdsworth, took his place. With his participation, the band recorded “Guaranteed”. By the time of writing the disk “Forever Now” Phil Gould returned to “Level-42”.
