About Father John Misty
Early Years
Joshua Michael Tillman was born on May 3rd, 1981 in Rockville, Maryland. He had an Evangelical upbringing and was the eldest of four children. Due to his strict upbringing, he was estranged from his parents for many years, but they have since reconciled. He learned the drums at an early age and then at the age of 12, learned how to play the guitar. His parents had no objection to music in the house as long as it was of a 'spiritual' nature!
He attended Nyack College in New York for a short time before moving to Seattle. He worked in a bakery while making music at night. It was then that a demo tape he had made was heard by Damien Jurado (also a singer/songwriter), and a year after that he was opening for Jurado, and he would give out CD-Rs of his songs at the shows. These songs would be the nucleus of his album, 'I Will Return'.
In 2006 Fargo Records re-issued 'I Will Return' and also a second album he had recorded, 'Long May You Run', as a double disc set. They had previously been released individually by Keep Recordings. During that year, Fargo Records released his first proper solo album, 'Minor Works'. In 2007 Yer Bird Records released its 4th album, 'Cancer and Delirium'.
The Latter Years
Tillman joined Fleet Foxes as their drummer in 2008 and stayed with them until the beginning of 2012 when he played his final show with them. In May of that year, he released the album 'Fear Fun' under the name of Father John Misty. This also saw a big change in style for Tillman. This album was followed by 'I Love You Honeybear' in 2015.
