Born in 1949, she debuted amongst the early 1970s boom in blues rock with the albums Bonnie Raitt (1971) and Give It Up (1972). Although the intervening years often found her struggling to break through the US charts, she kept working hard, eventually being rewarded with the major commercial success of 1989 LP Nick of Time.
