David Gray is an English singer, song-writer, and music producer. He recorded and released his first album in 1993, but it was not until six years later, with the release of White Ladder, that he received the critical acclaim and recognition that he deserved. The album topped the charts in the UK and was the fifth best-selling album there in the nineties. It was to be the start of something big for this talented man from the North of England.
About David Gray
Early Years
David Gray was born in Sale on the 13th June 1968 and grew up in Altrincham. He released ‘A Century Ends’, his first album, in 1993 and then a second, ‘Flesh’ in 1994. His style then was acoustic folk music and, although he was popular in those circles, neither album gave him much success, commercially. With the release of his third album, Sell, Sell, Sell, he had changed his style to the mixture of folk, rock, and electric music that he is so well-known for now. The album was well received critically but again was not a commercial success.
White Ladder and beyond
White Ladder was originally released in 1998 but, on its re-release in 2000, things really started happening for Gray. Two and a half years after its original release, the album was at number 1 in the UK. All his best-known hit singles, Babylon, This year's Love, Sail Away and Please Forgive Me, were taken from this album.
In 2002, the follow-up album to White Ladder was released; ‘A New Day at Midnight’. The critics did not well receive it well but the public thought differently and it went straight to number one again. The next album, Life In Slow Motion, in 2005, also went to number one in its first week of release. This time, the critics were on board as well!
Since then there have been another four albums, Draw The Line, 2009, Foundling, 2010, Mutineers, 2014 and a Greatest Hits album in 2007.
Gray is also touring extensively which has seen him suffering from total exhaustion on a few occasions!
