About Christy Moore

Planxty and Moving Hearts

Moore was an innate musician, but having graduated the Newbridge College, he started a bank career in the late 60’s. He always loved traditional Irish music so he listened to it as often as he could, spending his spare time at various folk pubs, enjoying the rhythm he loved so much. He didn’t stop at listening, though; in 1969, after acquiring a guitar and a bodhran (Irish traditional drum), he released “Paddy on the Road”, his first solo album.

An impressive career

More than a decade later, he was still working on his music career, forming the group “Planxty” together with Liam O’Flynn, Andy Irvine and Dónal Lunny, while recording “Prosperous”, another of his solo albums. Planxty wasn’t an overnight project; it soon became of Ireland’s most popular bands. Despite the success, the team separated in 1975, but Moore continued building up his solo career and laying the foundation for “Moving Hearts”, another endeared project.

These days

Over the years, despite his health problems and alcohol addiction, Moore released an impressive bundle of albums, most of them of great popularity. “Traveller” (1999), “This is the Day” (2001) and “Listen” (2009) are some of the albums which reached No. 1 on the Irish Album Charts (IRMA). His last project was released in 2016 by Sony Records, reaching a No. 3 peak position on IRMA.
