Speaking about the reggae music, one can’t mention Beres Hammond, a reggae artist from sunny Jamaica, particularly known for his lover's rock music. He achieved the greatest success in the 1990s; however, his career began in 1970s. Ninth of ten children, Beres was raised on his dad’s collection of jazz and soul music, being influenced by Alton Ellis later on. His music career started with taking part in local talent contests in 1972.
About Beres Hammond
How it all started
Hammond’s participation in talent contests led to the recording of Ellis’ “Wanderer”. After that, in 1975 he joined the Zap Pow band to be a lead singer. This is how his first single “The SYstem” was introduced to the world. However, Beres always dreamt about a solo career and his dream came true in 1976, when he released his first album - “Soul Reggae”, which became a great hit in Jamaica. His fans didn’t have to wait for his next albums too long - Beres Hammond releases “Let’s Make A Song” in 1980 and “Red Light” the year after. In 1985 Beres has released his next album called “Make a Song” under his own label - Harmony Records. Again, two of the songs from this album are becoming chart-toppers in Jamaica. One of them - “What One Dance Can Do”, started to break Beres into the international market.
New York and comeback
Beres leaves Jamaica in 1987 to conquer New York. There he records a duet "How Can We Ease the Pain" and his next album - “Have a Nice Weekend”. In 1990, however, Beres returns to Jamaica for good, leaving his fame in the USA and the UK with his hits “Respect To You Baby” and “Is This a Sign”, from his album “Love Affair”, released in 1992. The same year he releases the single “Fire”, which received positive feedback from the Reggae music community critics. Hammond records five more albums in the 1990s and establishes himself as a rock artist. After that, he releases six more albums, with the last one released in 2012 - “One Love, One Life”. In 2014 Beres Hammond was nominated for a Grammy Awards.
